Anguilla, a picturesque Caribbean territory, has found itself sitting on a digital treasure in the form of .ai domain registrations. While known for its coral reefs and beaches, Anguilla has been responsible for assigning .ai internet addresses since the 1990s. Recently, this domain has gained immense popularity, with tech startups like Stability.ai and Elon Musk's X.ai, as well as tech giants like Google and Facebook, securing .ai domains for their AI-focused endeavors. In the past year, the number of .ai registrations has doubled to 287,432, and it's estimated that Anguilla will generate up to $30 million in domain registration fees in 2023.

Anguilla's .ai domain business, although relatively small compared to .com domains, has become a significant revenue source for the territory. With a population of less than 20,000 and an economy heavily reliant on tourism, the increased demand for .ai domains and the rising registration fees have provided a boost to its income. The fixed price for a two-year .ai domain registration is $140, and this price increase from $120 in mid-April has contributed to higher revenue estimates.

For Anguilla, the unexpected surge in .ai domain registrations, driven in part by the AI boom and the popularity of services like ChatGPT, has the potential to bring in between $25 million and $30 million in 2023. This represents a significant portion of the territory's projected revenue for the year and a substantial percentage of its GDP, which was just over $300 million in 2021.

While the demand for .ai domains is currently on the rise, some experts anticipate potential issues with cybersquatting, similar to the early days of the dot-com boom. However, it's currently easier for companies to acquire .ai domains than their .com counterparts. Overall, as the AI industry evolves, the popularity of .ai domains may fluctuate, but many believe that the future of .ai domain registrations remains promising, given the ongoing growth of artificial intelligence.
